Minnesota
Business Venture (MBV), a summer business, financial literacy and entrepreneurship
program offered by BestPrep provides high school students hands-on experience
of the business world. This is created through the mentorship of on-campus
adult volunteers called Resident Business Leaders (RBLs), seminars with
a variety of professionals, and the chance to explore career opportunities.
The number one thing new RBLs
wish they would have known before camp is how much fun MBV is!
Resident Business Leaders (RBLs) stay on campus and work throughout the
week with a diverse group of 10-15 high school students called a “company.”
The RBL guides the company through specific activities and leads group
discussions.
The
company structure and the guidance of the RBL, with the assistance of
a returning “CEO” student leader, are the main components
of MBV!
This is where the program is most likely to achieve
its goal of enhancing financial literacy, developing teamwork and leadership
skills. During company meetings, students and RBLs make management decisions
for their business plan, prepare for the day’s presentations given
by visiting speakers; and address current issues. This is an excellent
experiential management and team-building opportunity.
Through participation in Minnesota Business Venture,
RBLs and sponsoring companies gain:
* Employee Development
* Leadership Development
* Management Skills
* Organization Skills
* Team-Building Skills
* Communication Skills
* Volunteer/Community Involvement
* Company Name Recognition
* Networking with other young professionals
As for me, I think
one of the key benefits of MBV for me was that I got to help kids
that reminded me of a younger version of me. I got to remember
what it felt like to be in high school with so many options in
front of me - being able to help students evaluate their situation
based on what I have learned was very rewarding. On a professional
level it definitely has increased my ability to facilitate effective
meetings - if you can get a room of 14 teenagers to focus on the
task at hand getting adults to do it is a snap.

The
primary RBL qualification is a desire to share business and work experiences
with high school students. Prior experience working with high school age
students is helpful, but not essential. Orientation is provided for a
day in early June (TBD) as well as a day at MBV prior to the students
arriving. Some other helpful qualities include: enthusiasm for your work
and business, strong communication skills, creative problem solving techniques,
team-building skills, desire to work with students from a diverse background,
ability to be an exemplary role model, and experience with your company
or field.
2009 Dates:
RBL Training Day: TBA – held in early June in the Twin Cities Session 1: July 11-17 at St. Cloud State University
Session 2: July 25-31 at St. John’s University
RBLs are housed in upper class student housing. Room and board expenses
are the responsibility of the RBL or their company. Total cost for the
week is $500 and is billed to the RBL or sponsoring company. Consider
the cost an economical investment in your personal development! Scholarships
may be available for RBLs whose company will not sponsor the payment.
