Email mentoring offers students the chance to develop a relationship with an adult, other than their parents and teachers, who can become a friend and a role model. eMentors can help students increase academic motivation, improve their reading and writing skills, provide pathways to career awareness, gain experience using technology, and promote self-confidence.
eMentors has developed a variety of focuses including:

  • eMentors for Careers Skills
  • eMentors for Financial Literacy

  • eMentors for specific subject areas

How it Works

  • BestPrep connects a class with employers to form an email mentoring partnership.

  • Teachers match each student with one employee and the pair exchanges weekly emails based on a series of Guiding Question prompts that can be tailored to meet various curriculums.

  • Teachers guide and monitor the process.

  • Mentors and students meet face-to-face at a structured, school-sponsored event preferably at the place of business.

  • BestPrep staff provides the connection with the employer, leadership and support for the project, and can lend their expertise when needed.

Goals of the Program
  • Students will understand the relationship between learning and their future career opportunities.

  • Students will learn the role that business, workplace and career skills play in their success in both school and the workplace.

  • Students will connect with a business volunteer via professional email communication.

eMentors in the Classroom
Teachers are encouraged to be creative in tailoring the eMentors program to fit their specific classroom and curriculum needs. BestPrep's eMentors program staff partners with each teacher to select weekly Guiding Questions topics that act as supplemental learning tools. These provide structure for students as they create their weekly messages for their mentors and for mentors as they craft their replies. BestPrep has created a grading rubric that teachers are encouraged to adapt and use as part of the eMentors program.
