On October 8, 2009, Pulitzer Prize winning author and New York Times columnist, Thomas Friedman, came to BestPrep’s Educational Forum to bring focus on the critical issues facing America. A packed ballroom of almost 900 guests were highly entertained and educated by Friedman who used his book, Hot, Flat and Crowded – Why We Need a Green Revolution – And How It Can Renew America to emphasize the importance of America’s leaders stepping up now to make the tough choices to make America competitive again.
Joining Mr. Friedman after his keynote address was a panel of Minnesota CEOs including Doug Baker of Ecolab Inc., Dick Kelly of Xcel Energy, and Russ Huffer of Apogee Enterprises. The panel was moderated by master of ceremonies Don Shelby and centered on Minnesota companies’ sustainability efforts.
The event also served to recognize the top 20 student essay writers in the Fostering Innovation in America competition, sponsored by Thomson Reuters. Students were asked to write a 700 word essay based on Mr. Friedman’s book. The 20 students and their teachers were treated to a private reception with Thomas Friedman prior to the luncheon. The third place winner, Jack Buckholtz from Mankato West High School, impressed the audience by reading a portion of his essay from the stage.
The event was a huge success and BestPrep thanks all of our sponsors, partners and guests! Additional photos from the event can be viewed by clicking here.
