Minnesota Business Venture

Students and volunteers gain leadership, teamwork and presentation skills, while networking and meeting new friends.

Program Overview

Minnesota Business Venture (MBV) is a residential summer program that brings high school students together to spend a week learning about leadership, business, financial literacy, and career options. Partnerships with our host campuses, St. Cloud State University and St. John’s University, allow students to experience college life firsthand. Resident Business Leaders mentors the students and guide them through the week’s activities. Students work together as a “company” while gaining knowledge from numerous guest speakers and volunteers.

Volunteer Opportunities

Each summer Minnesota Business Venture (MBV) seeks enthusiastic volunteers to enhance the student experience and knowledge at MBV. Opportunities range from an hour to a full-week, and focus on career development, business skills, financial management and entrepreneurship. Over 150 volunteers are needed to make MBV a success, and all opportunities take place at St. Cloud State University or St. John’s University in Collegeville in July.

Mock Interviewer

During the week, students complete a job application in preparation for a potential job opportunity. As a Mock Interviewer, you will sit down with a student and conduct a brief interview, followed by feedback to help them improve. Numerous interviews will be conducted over a 90 minute period. Volunteers are briefed and provided with sample questions.

Financial Planner

Students are eager to know about budgeting and investing. However, only 16.7% of high school seniors take a money management or personal finance course. We are seeking professional financial planners and/or advisors to lead a small group of students in discussions about the importance of effective financial planning. Volunteers are briefed and provided with curriculum for this hour long session.

Business Plan Judge

Throughout the week at MBV students work in groups called “companies” to create a business plan for a hypothetical product of their own design. Each group presents their marketing, operations and financial plan at the end of the week to a panel of judges. Participating as a judge is an excellent opportunity for you to see what students learn at MBV, and to give feedback to the students on the business plan that they have worked hard to create. This is a three and a half hour commitment.

Resident Business Leader

Members of the business community are needed to lead and facilitate a group of 10-15 students for one week. The week is a variety of leading the small group, listening to speakers cover business topics such as marketing, finance, motivation, branding and money management, and sharing ideas and resources amongst the students and other RBLs. This also serves as an opportunity for RBLs to learn about their own leadership, management and team-building skills. The number one thing new RBLs wish they would have known before camp is how much fun MBV is! If you have questions or would like more information regarding being an RBL, please contact us!
